Plant & Tree ID with buds and twigs
Join local expert botanist, Richard Mandelbaum at Mamakating Environmental Education Center (MEEC) for a day of winter plant and tree identification.
“MEEC will give us a wonderful place from which to walk and explore the biodiverse Basha Kill area, a local ecological treasure, and a comfortable warm place to move into as needed if it is a very cold day, and to have lunch.
So much of winter botany, like winter as a whole, asks us to slow down. We'll spend the day paying attention to the subtleties of winter botany - bark, buds, twigs, and the evergreen plants that persist throughout the winter (pines and other conifers, evergreen plants, mosses). Between the botanizing we'll delve into winter ecology. During our time indoors, as needed, we can continue to look closely at plant parts - twigs, buds, etc. - that I have collected, using loupes but also potentially my microscopes. “ A slideshow of detailed photographs of twigs and buds of many of our local woody plants, will be shared over lunch and also at the end of the day for the final 45 minutes or so when the sun is setting.”

More details and handouts will be sent to folks who register.
